Lube Cubes – What Kind of Lube is Best For a Rubik’s Cube?

There are several different kinds of lubes available. Different lubes are meant to solve specific problems. You can mix and match lube cubes work better for you. However, the cubes should be cleaned thoroughly with a toothbrush or soapy water if they become gummy or dirty. Silicone-based lubes are more popular, as they leave a smooth lube coating on the plastic and make the cubes turn easier. Some of the most popular lubes are Lubicle Black and Lubicle Speedy.

WD-40

Rubik’s cubes can be lubricated with a variety of products, including silicone and PFPE based lubricants. However, oil based lubricants are not recommended for beginners and can ruin the cube. While WD-40 is safe for use on a cube, it has some disadvantages. For starters, it can damage plastic cubes and may slow down their speed-solving capabilities.

WD-40 and Liquid Wrench contain petroleum distillates that can leave an unpleasant odor. WD-40 contains less than five percent silicone. Aloe-based lubes such as The Cubicle are safe and effective to use with cubes. While you may experience a slight oily feeling when using WD-40, it is not toxic to your skin.

Although WD-40 is not a true lubricant, it is often used by mechanics to remove things that have stuck. Its formula also includes ingredients for soil removal, anti-corrosion agents, and penetration. It was once known as Stoddard Solvent, a name which was synonymous with mineral spirits for decades.

Compound X

Compound X for lube cubers has been developed by CubicleLabs in the USA in August 2018. It’s a water-based lubricant that increases the speed of twisty puzzles by using the attraction of charged silicone polymers. The effect lasts longer than silicone and doesn’t produce the typical gomme or goop. It’s available in a variety of different colours and scents.

You can also mix different lubricants to solve particular issues. Some cubers prefer lube that leaves a smooth coating on plastic. Others prefer silicone-based lubes because they tend to turn more smoothly. Lubicle comes in different weights, so you can use different lube for different parts of the cube. For example, Lubicle Speedy and Black are good choices for pieces and cores, respectively.

Compound X for lube cubers also come in seasonal scents, which make them a great choice during the spring/summer seasons. A lubricant can improve the feel of the cube, make it easier to turn, and increase the speed. It can be applied to each piece individually, and given a few minutes to work.

Maru Lube

Maru lube is a watery silicone waster based lubricant that works well for lubricating cubes. This silicone lube comes in a 10ml vial. It can be used on smaller or larger cubes. It will make your cube feel fast and gummy.

This lubricant is easy to use and comes in a bottle with a tube for measuring the amount of lube needed. A little goes a long way, so it will last for about 50 cubes. When used properly, Maru lube can last for more than 50 cubes.

Another option is the Maru DIY cube, which came out in 2009. It was magnetic and offered a variety of colours. It was also reported to have smooth turning. It was replaced in early 2015 by the Maru nano cube. This version is smaller than the others and measures 15mm across on all sides. It is intended as a collector’s item, and it comes in a variety of colours. It is also available in glow-in-the-dark versions.

For more speed and control, try using a watery lube. Silicone is a good choice for speed cubes, as it is safe to apply and is effective even on plastic speed cubes.
